Youth Leadership students smile after completing the high ropes course at Sharpe Reservation.

Youth Leadership is an innovative, leadership development program designed to develop the academic, social and life skills of area youth. Students will have opportunities for substantive interaction with his or her peers, community based service organizations, institutions of higher education, and professionals from local industry.

For the first year, sophomores will participate in Junior Achievement working on the formation of their own classroom based company including stock sales, product selection, and sales and marketing techniques.  During the second year, as juniors, students will participate in college/real world preparation sessions about résumé writing, interview skills, college applications, paying for college and finance education.

Youth Leadership sessions occur monthly, from 6-8:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month unless otherwise specified. Additional class includes a mandatory team-building day on a Saturday at the end of September or beginning of October. Students are emailed the full schedule prior to the first class, and are permitted to miss no more than two class sessions. The program runs from September through the end of May. Track 1 students (sophomores) will participate in a Day of Service with their classmates for a Saturday in April, while Track 2 students (juniors) will complete a 20-hour internship.

Each Youth Leadership session will also feature a prominent community leader who will host an interactive lesson on various topics including leadership, well-being and community awareness. Sophomores and juniors will participate in this part of the session together. Students will emerge from this dynamic program more confident and well-rounded with improved leadership skills and a better understanding of themselves and their community. By the end of the program, participants will achieve more self confidence and develop skills and attitudes needed for success in college and life. The program also encourages the development of organizational and problem solving skills.

Youth Leadership is a collaborative effort with area school districts and includes the local community, business leaders and Foundation staff. Youth Leadership is open to any student from any school or district within Dutchess County.
